Planning Phase
We came across an exhibition called "The Uncommon Good" held by the National Cancer Council Malaysia at KLCC, and naturally we have grabbed this opportunity to do our volunteering work there. Prior to that event, we also met Miss Priya the PIC for the MAKNA exhibition for a discussion. Through that event, we also encounter another opportunity of volunteering which is at Pertubuhan Pusat Kebajikan Destiny located at Klang where they care for refugees children. So, we decided to go there for our volunteering work. For every project, what came behind is careful planning, discussion and consultation with our advisor, Dr.Badrul. Especially for the Klang project, our greatest challenge is that we have to find our own transportation to get there. That's when teamwork comes into play whereby we have to approach our seniors or friends to actually borrow car from them . In the overall planning process, I think we have gained quite some new experiences and indirectly built a strong rapport with our fellow group members.

Execution Phase 1
The Uncommon Good-NPO Forum and Fair
24-25 November 2017
KLCC
Around 6am, we depart from UM to KLCC. As soon as we reach there, we are distributed to our specific departments. As for me, I was in charge of the Welfare Cluster where participating NPOs include Kechara Soup Kitchen, SPCA, eHomemakers KL and many more. Before we start the event, we were given a briefing about the organizations  Basically, what we do is we engage the public by explaining what the organizations do and how they are able to impact the society. Indirectly, raising awareness on certain issues such as poverty and etc. Besides I was also tasked to promote volunteering opportunities to the public, hoping that some day that through their participation in certain project, they are able to impact the lives of the under privileged. Furthermore,  during that exhibition, we also took the opportunity to visit other NPOs booths. We listened to their concern on certain issues and learned how their organization works on improving the situation. We also took this opportunity to do networking with them and exchange ideas on how the university especially student chapters can collaborate with the NPOs organization and foster a spirit of volunteering among university's students. For example, there is an environment advocacy group called the Free Tree Society giving out free seedling to the public in which I think clubs like UMCares Royal can collaborate with them to actually improve the greenery of 12th college.

Great meeting this energetic bunch of people!

by teaching them basic ICT skills or how to make handcrafted stuffs.
These skills can actually help them to sustain their life in the future

Execution Phase 2
Pertubuhan Pusat Kebajikan Destiny
1st December 2017
Klang
After reaching Klang , we had a light breakfast. When we reached there, the kids were so delighted to see us. There were around 30 plus kids (2 years old to 7 years old) from refugees family. The person in charge of the centre is Miss Irene. She brief us about the significance of starting this centre to care for the refugees's children. To summarize it, what they do is actually teaching the children values and discipline and empowers them so that they can actually blend into the society in the future. In the morning, before we begin, we had an interactive session with them whereby we introduce ourselves to them. After that, we did some dancing with them and we teaches them some new dance moves too! Then, we were given a slot to educate about some basic ethics and values. For example, not to throw rubbish anywhere you like and etc. We talked and engaged with the kids. We had a very interactive and fun session with the kids and most of them are very attentive. Then, we held classes with the little kids like teaching them basic alphabets and calculations. During lunch, we helped the teachers to prepare and give food to the children. After lunch, we helped the children to clean themselves up and bath them. In the afternoon we were given free time to play with the more elder kids and we watched a movie too. At the end of the day, we bid farewell to each other and our group went back.

Post Project Reflection

Through both projects, it is indeed an eye opener for me. I think our group has accomplish this subject's objectives which is for us to engage the society and leave an impact to the society, indirectly or directly. In the sense that, I think we managed to raise awareness on certain issues and we manage to get people to do volunteering. I am confident that one day, some men and women's life will get better based on what they did. Besides, I feel that these two projects also impacted my life and change the way I perceived of volunteering as well. Through the exhibition, firstly, I gained a lot of knowledge. For example, about health and environmental awareness and etc and particularly about the NPOs I was responsible in. I also learnt new things such as how to engage with public and start a conversation with a stranger, indirectly improved my communication skills. Secondly, after spoken with so many volunteers, they made me to believe in even the smallest action can bring about a change to the world. In some case, they are unsure about how their actions gonna cause a big change. Yet, they still do it, with hope that what they are doing can actually influence and empowers others to the same and impact the people's life. I am very impressed on what they have accomplish and how they empower and help people.
Moreover, a visit to Klang has yet again remind me of how fortunate I am as kid last time.  They don't get to enjoy the things we used to enjoy last time. These children are really happy with our presence. We really enjoyed our time with them. On the other hand, we also learn the importance of these common values to be taught to these kids such as discipline, attitude and virtues so that in the future they can blend in to the society. This is because they came from a very tough background and their parents' priority has always been putting food on the table and may forget about nurturing these values among their children. Thus, education is something important for these children. That's what we are always to emphasize during our visit there, to always relate values and virtues to these  children using everyday's action. It is my sincere hope that somehow through the interactions we had with the kids, we are able to leave an impact to them.

From my involvement in both of these events, volunteering is definitely a thing that I would do in the future.

Love cannot remain by itself - it has no meaning.
Love has to be put into action, and that action is service.
