The Uncommon Good

&

 Pertubuhan Pusat Kebajikan Destiny

Well, hello everyone! These past few weeks have been ultimately hectic for me including spending some personal time for the completion of our social engagement course. Nonetheless, there are so many things that i had discovered, learnt and witnessed!

Our first project is 'The Uncommon Good', a non-profit organisation (NPO) forum and fair which was held on 24th and 25th of November 2017 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Center and hosted by MAKNA (Majlis Kanser Nasional). This fair featured various NPOs that comes from different clusters such as education, welfare, environment and healthcare that come with diverse missions, from helping the vulnerable communities to pleading for just conditions of life and protecting heritage.

We had the chance to become volunteers for this event and honestly speaking, i find this experience is priceless as throughout this event, i had discovered and learnt various current existing problems in Malaysia. I feel that other people should also know these problems so that all of us can work together and come out with a better solution. I got to know that dolphins do actually exist in the sea of Malaysia and some researchers in Malaysia are trying to find out more to help these creatures do not come to endangerment. Besides, i got to know that there are hotlines for children to voice out for help through Childline Malaysia, Malaysia Children TV Programme Foundation. Datin PH Wong, the representative, said during the fair, there are some of them who were also sexually abused and called to ask for help. This fact did surprised me as i have never thought this hotline could actually help.

The representative from Tropical Research & Conservation Centre (TRACC), he himself has been diving into the sea to plant all these artificial corals
Handbags made from seatbelt and produced by 'Biji-biji Iniative' (a company that make handbags, pencil cases, tote bags from thrown away seatbelt and banner)
Malaysia Parkinson's Disease Association (MPDA)
Being able to be a part of this event is very meaningful to me as i got to engage with all these passionate people from various NPOs and of course, to be able to relay all these significant messages to public somehow does give me the sense of satisfaction. I hope that i can spread more of these awareness to my friends and family too.

The second project is our visit to Pertubuhan Pusat Kebajikan Destiny which is located in Klang, Selangor. This visit is particularly special for me as i have never thought of meeting refugee kids.

We met an amazing women (the owner who runs the center) who said that these children do not differ much from other children and they too need the same need like the rest. Her enthusiasm to fight for these kids attracted us too to come and visit. I found that her words seems so true after i reached there. Before this, i do not really see the importance of other people from other countries to actually care for these kids. However, after going there, i believe that they too have the same right and deserve the very simple basic need. We held few activites with the kids that emphasize the value of thanking people, the value of saying sorry when you make mistake toward people, the value of behaving properly not only around adults, the value of helping each other. I found that these are some of the values that should have been emphasized more in schools. Kids should be educated since they were young since at these age, they actually learn better. I am inspired too with the teachers from this centre who stand with the values of discipline and hygene. Do not be surprised that these kids are very clean and healthy!

Teaching them to say thank you whenever they receive something

They learn to eat on their own as this action can help to instil sense of independence in them
These kids are precious gems and i believe that we should not discriminate them just because of their status and they too deserve the same need like the others
Visiting them does not only open my eyes on the issue of whether these refugee kids deserve to stay in the country or not. However, i got to see that humans are actually the same and none of us deserve to be discriminated simply because of our race, skin colour or religion etc.

In conclusion, i believe that discrimination should not exist in the first place and everyone deserves the same chance to lead a happy life. I hope that i can continue to spread the awareness in combating current problems to everyone who will come across my path in the future and i pray that all the kids out there can get better access to education simply because education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

Lots of love,
Misya
